I want to know the total length to be measured and the required resolution. As you have given example of "Digital Calipers", I think you require an absolute encoder not the incremental one. I suggest to divide the project in three steps: A. Finalize the detailed specification. B. Developing the first Prototype. C. Developing the final prototype.
