This project involves development of a game-based “Word Environment” word learning exercise for GLEN World, a nonprofit initiative for developing an online platform for basic English language instruction, especially targeted toward underprivileged, non-native English speaking populations. GLEN World website back end development Our key goals for this project are (a) to develop a game-based “Word Learning Environment” word learning exercise defined below and (b) to find talented and creative developers who are experts in the state-of-the-art web frontend development technologies such as HTML5, javascript, CSS, and are passionate about the cause. Here is some information about the game. Please note that we welcome and encourage creative ideas and mock-ups from the developers. 1. Word Learning Environments (WLE): Immersive environments (park/playground, house, city streets, shops) with imagery and animation, explored by point-and-click (or by touch, for touch-sensitive tablets). This emulates pointing out and naming objects to a child: for example, when exploring a park, you can click and learn words such as “boy,” “girl,” “ball,” “tree,” “bird,” and so on. A sample of “single-level” WLE is here: [login to view URL] The new exercise that we want to create now is a “hierarchical” WLE with a street environment being the top layer, where clicking on the buildings / shops in the street image would lead to opening different images for the interior of the corresponding shops, each of which are independent single-level WLE panels like in the weblink above. We start with a large image of a long street. A user can scroll along and zoom in where desired- and then once a selection is made (by clicking a door or text on say a shop building in the street image...) the image would scale (in effect zooming in) and then transition (dissolving in some manner) to an interior shop scene (which is a single level WLE). In other words, imagine a "viewing frame" on the screen which would show part of the street image at a time, and the user can navigate to the left or the right via keyboard arrows or via clicking at the right/left end of the frame that would lead to a different portion of the street entering the frame or being visible. Once the user clicks on a particular building / door / sign, a new image appears showing the interior of the corresponding building or shop that the user can then explore like a regular single level WLE like in the weblink above. We will provide all the required images. You are expected to develop the complete exercise using these images. Suggested frontend technologies: HTML5, jQuery, CSS, etc.? 2. Portability and robustness of our website for different hardware platforms is an important consideration. Although our first launch target platform is PC (where cross browser compatibility is important), this would very soon be followed by mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones given their prevalence across the globe. This mobile friendly design or easy portability to mobile platforms with little work requirement should be considered as a design requirement. We would like to mention that the designer/developer has complete freedom to reimagine the website and our requirements and get back with ideas for getting our content across to our target audience in an intuitive, accessible format. A note: As a rule, we will always make sure that our developers get proper compensation and credit for their work and are recognized and acknowledged by everyone visiting our website.
