I have several CentOS 4.5 machines at different hosts, where I have installed the snmpd service using "yum install net-snmp", but every time I try to start the snmpd service, it claims to start successfully but then terminates immediately:
[shell]# service snmpd start
Starting snmpd: [ OK ]
[shell]# ps auwx | grep snmp
root 29757 0.0 0.0 4376 624 pts/0 S+ 12:20 0:00 grep snmp
[shell]#
This only seems to occur on CentOS 4.5 machines, not CentOS 4.4 machines.
The only thing it writes to /var/log/messages when it starts, is the lines:
Jan 31 12:20:30 D2585 snmpd: snmpd startup succeeded
Jan 31 12:20:30 D2585 snmpd[29749]: NET-SNMP version 5.1.2
which doesn't indicate an error.
Someone suggested that I run it under strace, and this was the output, even though I don't understand any of it:
I need to get this problem fixed so that when I start snmpd, it starts running and stays running.
## Deliverables
I need a set of instructions such that I can start the snmpd service and have it continue running instead of dying immediately, which is what it currently does on all my CentOS 4.5 machines.
For security reasons I can't give out remote root access to the machine but I'll try anything you suggest and I'll gather any information that you need.
## Platform
Need to find out why this error is happening on CentOS 4.5. (The problem doesn't seem to happen on CentOS 4.4.)
