I have previous experience with very similar requirement using Java Sockets and Java RMI since JDK1.4 I once developed a Superbreakout game and using Java RMI I was able to add players to the same. The same can be done using SOCKETS. I also have experience with kiosks to purchase movie tickets using pure java and sockets. If you are working with pure Java it will be easy, I can set the code for n players depending on the JDK you are using.
