Part 1, 50 marks The debate around climate change continues, as to whether mankind’s activities are the driver or whether it is just a natural cycle of events. However, the Conference of the Parties in Paris in December 2015 made some very well agreed and sound commitments, in terms of future global targets for reduction of carbon emissions. It can be argued that we should reduce the use of carbon fuels, whatever the climate change viewpoint, simply because we only have finite resources in that area. However, that may be a difficult message to convey to energy users at the moment, with the ever falling price of oil, encouraging higher levels of use. Engaging people to be more aware of their energy use and how they can cut wastage, both at home and at work, has been an issue for many years and is not helped by this fall in prices. The UK is an example of a country with supply capacity problems and the need to construct more electricity generation plant. This opens the debate between renewables, nuclear power and carbon based generation, all of which face opposition for different reasons. Many countries, including the UK, waste large amounts of energy. Global demand for energy continues to rise, driven by growing world population and third world countries becoming more developed, thereby with increasing energy needs. What are your views on the global energy supply and demand perspective into the future? What do you see as the priorities for action? For example, could some of these be met by legislation, would people need to become better engaged, or do we just wait for expected long term price rises and global warming to drive action? Part 2, 50 marks For a major commercial or industrial manufacturing company, give some examples of how energy might be used in its processes and what the opportunities might be to improve energy efficiency or to better manage energy use.
