Configure Sendmail to accept smtp-authentication in CentOS 6 on my new GoDaddy VirtualPrivateServer via ssh

I have a new VPS (Virtual private Server) from GoDaddy. I do not have cPanel. I do everything via ssh. I am having trouble getting sendmail to allow remote logins to check mail. Im getting connection refused errors on port [login to view URL] i do get in on port 587. I have tried to reconfigure sendmail several times but i can't get past port 25. Also. There's a possibility GoDaddy may be involved somehow but i am getting nowhere with their support. I'm 95% done setting up thisnew boxbut without sendmail I'll have to cancel my account with godaddy and try again somewhere else (URG). Can you help? Do you know ssh and senamil and all that jazz?

As a full tome software engineer, I've got plenty of experience dealing with mailservers. I run my own private mailserver and know exactly what to do to get it working. Unless GoDaddy blocks port 25, which I'm unsure of as I am not one of their customers, you can have your service up and running in as little as two days at minimum cost.
