An innovative technology that can be used to deliver renewable electricity production that is higher than the total electrical consumption of a building while covering the heat demand on a yearly basis is presented. The idea is to use a conventional ground source heat pump, slightly modified to revert its cycle and generate electricity, coupled with a horizontal ground heat exchanger and a solar thermal roof. This so-called reversible heat pump/organic Rankine cycle (HP/ORC) unit is a flexible system with three operating modes: Direct Heating, Heat Pump and Organic Rankine Cycle. This work focuses on describing the dynamic model of such a complex multi-component system (building, solar roof, ground heat exchanger, thermal energy storage and reversible HP/ORC unit) followed by techno-economic anaylsis of the system under different operational conditions. The study of influences includes: (building envelopes, climates, appliances, lightning profiles and heat demand profiles) . Finally, the profitalibity of this system is compared against a competitive mature technology for Positive Energy Building (PEB), including a heat pump and photovoltaic panels. The results show that in the Danish study case, single family house with a 120 m2 solar collector, the electrical production trough the ORC production yields 3012 kWh/year while the total annual electrical consumption is 2318 kWh/year. However, the economic feasibility study indicates that the HP/ORC systems is not competitive (592 € less in cash flow income) to the alternative, HP coupled with PV energy system solution. Nontheless, the HP/ORC unit becomes favourable in buildings where the heat demand is large.
