redo graphics on a joomla index page and maintain its responsive design

Please look at David-hearne/xombo. I would like to get the index page looking a lot better - It is already responsive but i want the look changed.. I want space between the pictures (see attached graphic) and I want the descriptions of the graphics beneath each picture not on top of them as they are now. I have more text to use for the index page but my first issue is to get the graphics looking better. The problem is also the i want my book cover to display at the top of the page in the header - so that means the header has to change a bit. So for the first part of this job that is it.. This is a joomla site.
