Extract Exif information from Image File

This is a wordpress based project. I want to extract the 'Exif' information from an image file and then allocate those extracted values to some local on page variables using an explode statement or something similar.
I can already extract the exif information myself using php, but I don't know how get those values into an explode statement or some other code to get those variables to use elsewhere on the same wordpress page.
I will supply a link to the wordpress page showing the example of where we have extracted the Exif information already once I know you have a good idea of what is to be done.
I'm sure this will be easy for someone who knows their way around php.
There will also be a second part to this project if the first part can be completed successfully. The second part of the project would involved being able to write Exif variables to selected images using some sort of php process.
