A roleplay exercise designed for senior manager within a university. The scenario would call for the candidate to play the part of the senior manager whilst a roleplay actor would play the part of a 'difficult' academic. The scenario could be a performance related conversation in which the manager needs to gain some sort of commitment from the accademic. The accademic would be a reasonably high profile person who has a reputation for producing very good research which brings the university a lot of positive attention. However, he/she has tended to focus more on high performaing PhD students and has began to neglect his/her responsibilities regarding other departmental duties and his/her dealings with undergraduate students. He/she has perhaps missed a few lectures and supervisions and has instead got some of the PhD students to cover for them. He/she was also involved in interviewing prospective students recently and some concerns were raised about their professionalism. e.g they were late for a couple of interview and on one occassion they had the wrong student notes. The academic may have a few personal issues going on, but their main issues might be that they have taken on too much in terms of work which promotes themself. The manager is new to the role and needs to make their mark. They need to keep the academic on board as he/she would be a catch for another university, but you need to get them back on side.
Materials needs to include a brief for the roleplayer, a brief for the candidate taking on the role of senior manager/director. Evidence materials which could include emails, voice mail message transcript, text, student feedback forms, letter from other stake holder.
The exercise should be challenging and pitched for senior management roles. Reading through the briefs should take between 30 and 40 minutes, the meeting should take no more than 20 minutes.
