Custom taxonomy edit screen in WordPress admin

In wp-admin WordPress displays custom taxonomies in their own divs. This works great when you only have a few terms, but if you have a lot everything gets cluttered. (figure one)
I'm looking for a WordPress function that can display and edit custom taxonomy values on a post edit page differently. I want to put figure two inside of a custom meta box and hide the ugly boxes.
The function I need you to build will read the current term (there will only ever be one) associated with the post and display it as referenced above. This function must work with dropdowns and inputs.
I can provide you a script to put the taxonomy terms in a dropdown menu if you need it.
