How do I get paid?

We recommend the use of our Milestone Payment System. With this system, you can ask your employer to create a Milestone Payment(s) first before doing any work. Once the work is done, you can request to have the Milestone Payment released to you. Once released, the funds will be transferred to your account balance on the site.


Why use a Milestone Payment?

  • Using a Milestone Payment helps build freelancers' reputation. As you can earn project reviews if you are paid in Milestone Payments, you can gain a better reputation. An improved reputation puts a freelancer higher in the bid rankings. The higher you are, the more likely you will be picked and the more money you will earn.

  • Trust can be established between the employer and freelancer. With a Milestone Payment created on a project, freelancers can be assured that their employer is willing to pay for their work,  and they can be encouraged to work hard. 

  • Freelancers share a fair control over their payments. To ensure that there is fair control over Milestone Payments, only the employer can create and release Milestone Payments, but only the freelancer can cancel or return them once they accept the project award.​ ​

  • The Milestone Payment System has a security feature called the Dispute Resolution Service. This gives you a claim to your payments after completing a project.


How do I check if my employer created a Milestone Payment?

You can request to have a Milestone Payment created for you, but it will still depend on your employer whether it gets created or not. To confirm if your Milestone Request has been created into a Milestone Payment, view your incoming Milestones before starting work. 

You may check for an incoming Milestone Payment by doing the following:

  • Log in to your Freelancer.com account.

  • Mouse over your balance at the upper right part of your homepage and select Financial Dashboard.

  • On your Financial Dashboard page, Milestone Payments created for you will be listed under your Incoming Milestones tab.

How do I cancel an Incoming Milestone Payment?

If your employer accidentally creates a duplicate Milestone Payment or a Milestone Payment with the wrong amount, they can ask you to have it cancelled.

To cancel a Milestone Payment, please follow these steps:

  • Log in to Freelancer.com.

  • Mouse over your balance at the upper right part of your homepage and select Financial Dashboard.

  • On your Financial Dashboard page, locate the Milestone Payment from your list of Incoming Milestones.

  • Click the down arrow button under Actions and select Cancel.

Should I get payments outside of Freelancer.com?

We strongly recommend to get paid only through Freelancer.com's Milestone Payment System. This is the safest and most secure form of payment on the site.
