Elections come with big administrative efforts and costs, in order to come over these difficulties it is proposed to update the voting technologies and implement an electronic voting system. This system will help us to improve the reliability, convenience, trust and ease of voting. The online voting system will ensure that the encrypted votes are accurate, privacy of the voters,
The traditionally used paper ballot systems are currently being used by the organization. Some of the issues we face on paper ballot voting are
- Lots of manual work
- Inaccuracy of eligibility
- Chances of double voting due to manual errors
- Takes a lots of time for vote counting
- Difficult to see history
- Financial costs if the voting is for a larger scale.
The proposed online voting system is aimed to provide a secure, fast and efficient way for the interested parties to conduct online without much interaction of human. The list of eligible list can be stored in the system in the form of a data base. Eligible voters will be verified from the database by using the unique identification number (NID/Passport/Student ID) given to the voters. The eligible voters will be forwarded to the voting booth where they can vote by just a click to the choice of candidate. Once the vote is casted the system will update the database by the unique identification number to stop double voting. Additionally, the internal counters will be updated by the number of votes so at the end of the elections the results can be easily displayed and extracted effortlessly. The online voting system will provide accurate reports much faster than normal paper ballot voting systems.
Some of the reports which will be directly available from the voting system includes:
- Overall votes by individuals
- Percentage of voters from the eligible list of votes
- Number or males and female voters
By using the unique identification number this online voting system will be able to identify if the voter is eligible to vote in the election. This is done by checking the checking the data base if the unique identification number is stored in the data base. After the verification process the user will be able to vote just by clicking the choice of candidate. In order to minimize human error, the voter has to double confirm after choosing the candidate. Once the vote is casted the data base will be updated by the unique identification number to ensure that the same person cannot vote twice during the same election. After the voting period the person in charge will be able to view the results of the elections. In order to make more secure the in charge needs to enter a password to access the results.
One of the limitation for online voting system is the voters list has to be updated and manual fed to the system if the voter list changes. The system is offline hence it has to be manually updated to the system. Even though the system is offline it is open for inside manipulation and if the manipulation occurs the system will not be able to provide accurate results for the elections.
We Propose the online voting system to be used on windows platform as it is the most commonly used operating system. The software will be designed with Microsoft visual basics. No additional software is needed once the software is compiled.
The software can be used in almost any notebooks or desktops. In order to ensure the speed and to prevent crashes due to any hardware resources the resource used for the software will be very minimal. A part from a notebooks or desktops the software only requires a keyboard and a mouse to operate the application.
