OBESITY
according to Ayurveda
Obesity or being over weight is a condition characterized by excessive storage of fat in the body.
CAUSES:
1 . Excess intake of food : it leads to increase of digestive fire because, body needs a way to digest increased food quantity, because there is blockage in medo Dhatu, more and more fat tissue is produced, leading to weight gain.
2. Excess intake of heavy to digest : sweet, coolant and oil food, which directly increase fat tissue.
3. Lac of physical exercise, day sleeping : physical exercise is a way to allow the conversation of fat into bone tissue.
4. Lack of mental stress , increased happiness
5. Heredity, hormonal, environmental, behavioral, cultural
6. Other factors such as pregnancy, medications like corticosteroids, insulin and estrogen, psychiatric drugs, endocrine disorders.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS:
• Increased body fat
•. Breathlessness on exertion
• lethargy
• excessive sweating with bad odor
•. Difficulty sexual intercourse
• decreased life span
•. Excessive hunger, excessive thirst, excessive sleep
PATHOLOGY :
1. INCREASED OF AGNI : digestive strength, leading to increase of appetite and food intake.
2. HAMPERED CONVERSION OF MEDO DHATU TO ASTHI DHATU : there is blocking of transition of nutrition from Meda to Asthi, leading to increased production of Medo Dhatu.
3. IMBALANCE OF VATA DOSHA : leading to increased digestion strength.
4. IMBALANCE OF KAPHA DOSHA : caused by excess sweets, fried food, excess rest, etc.
MANAGEMENT :
VATA AND KAPHA DOSHA BALANCE :
• having a cup of water , mixed with honey, as the first step in the morning.
• increased consumption of barley, which helps to take care of digestion strength.
• AVOID : foods that are hard to digest and cold, day time sleeping, etc.
PANCHAKARM TREATMENT :
• KASHAYA BASTI ( Decoction enema with strong herbs ): helps to balance vata and also useful in correction of fat tissue conversation into bone tissue.
• ROOKSHA UDVARTANA ( Dry powder massage ) : massage with horse gram, devdaru, rasna, etc., or massage with Kola Kulathadi churn to burn down the fat deposited underneath the skin, especially in tummy, thighs, and buttocks areas.
• vamana and virechana
HERBS
• buttermilk, fermented with spices acts as a catalyst to bring in the transformation of fat tissue.
• administration of honey with a cup of water.
• vidanga, nagara, yavaksara, loha bhasma with honey and powder of yava and amla.
• intake of Guduchi, Musta, Triphala, Bibhitaki, and Amla.
• administration of honey along with Decoction of Bilva panchamula.
• shilajit
• juice of agnimantha
• alcoholic preparations like, Ayaskriti, Lohasavam that help to reduce fat.
FOR LOSE WEIGHT QUICKLY :
1. Regular exercise
2. Drink half a glass of water before food, not more than half a glass of water.
3. Eating slowly.
4. Include barley in your diet.
5. Avoid sweets, oily foods, junk foods and high carbohydrates like polished rice and potato.
6. If you really want sweet, eat fruits in limited quantity.
7. Replace curds with butter milk.
8. Eat at regular time schedule.
9. Drink maximum amount of water as you can.
10. Drink a tsp of honey and lemon juice, on empty stomach. Then drink a glass of water.
11. Small meals at frequent intervals is better than big meals 2 or 3 times a day.
12. Massage with oil regularly in abdomen, buttocks and such other areas will be mobilized, then exercise.
13. Have more bitter vegetables like bitter gourd and the bitter variety of drumsticks.
14. Replace refined flour with whole wheat flour and rice with brown rice and parboiled rice.
15. Increase intake of fruits, salads and vegetables.
HOME REMEDIES :
