Need calculations and a mock-up for a rear-end collision, forces and momentum exerted upon occupant. Light-weight pickup truck crashed into a stationary SUV. Occupant (restrained) was subjected to deceleration impact as the driver did not brake and was in 3rd gear as he struck the non-moving SUV. The bottom of the truck (drive-train) came off on impact when hitting the SUV. Then when the SUV disconnected from the pickup truck, the pickup truck abruptly moved downward again. I have details of car mass for each of the cars involved and weights of the occupants. The mock-up can be in CAD or a black marker "physics cartoon" drawing with the data. Like an architectural/engineering sketch but with an editorial style. Or you can crunch the numbers and provide the data and equations and I'll create the drawing with the information.

Hi there! I have a great experience in Physics because I worked many years as a scientific researcher in the theoretical physics domain. Looking at the problem I might say: 1) having masses and velocities of the two cars (and the passenger), we can calculate their momentum before and after the collision. That may give as the momentum differences of these three. 2) to get the forces we must estimate the time of the collision that depend on the elasticity of the materials. This is a very unclear part especially for the passenger since his place in the car and behavior in that time is unknown (I think). So I do not see the way to get the unique solution, but there may be a variety of prepositional solutions.

Without further data this isn’t possible to answer. What any physics grad can do, like me, is tell you the raw deceleration and forces experienced by each moving unit, ie each vehicle and occupant, according to the data you’ve given. But this will be skewed by other data, ie was there a spare tyre - very heavy and would effect the answer-? Then you have crumple zones and safety effects like airbags and seatbelt pre tensioners to consider. All of that would need to be taken into account to answer this, certainly to make it of any use in a legal setting, say as result of accident. Unless this is a strictly theoretical exercise (in which case I can solve it for you easily) please don’t waste your money paying for an answer that will be invalid in any other setting. To get the actual figures you need, you would want to look at crash test data and manufacturers test data for each vehicle. In Europe that would come from NCAP and you’d need a fully trained crash investigator to tell you. I don’t know what the US equivalent is but you’d be looking at years of training to get the sort of answer you need to take to court. Treat this answer as free advice from a well intentioned citizen of the world, unless you’re feeling generous! Hope whoever was involved is ok.

Hello dear! I'm glad you posted an ad with clear details and a defined claim. I'm a mechanical engineer graduate. I graduated with a degree in motors and motor vehicles. I'm an expert in this field. For your specific request, I can give you all the information you need ... How long it would take to slow the truck to stop (decelerated), the stopping distance, the time it took to stop ..). I can make the required drawing in a cad program in agreement with you and the format that suits you.

Hi, my name is Andrii, I have a master degree in physics, so I can help you with your project. If you have not only all mass, but also distances moved after collision and initial velocity's of vehicle - it can be done very quick calculations. It's not give you exact number, because of type of: materials in a car(is it hard or soft have different quality to deform), point of impact, respective centers of mass for each vehicle, type of surface and it conditions(bumps, hot, cold, wet, etc), a lot of variations can change calculations results. But if you wish estimation and not exact value, then it is possible to calculate with assumptions and after neglect some of interactions. Like make it just by Newtons laws and get raw estimations. Please answer.
