Hi! We are a tiny company trying to get a small black walnut business going. Black walnuts are a North American native tree and are not the same kind of walnut that is sold in most grocery stores. They are really difficult to process and about 80% of an in-shell black walnut is shell, not nut, unlike other kinds of nuts that are mostly nut, not shell. Most black walnuts that grow are never used - most tree owners think of them as yard waste. They are just too much of a hassle for individuals to process. Tree ownership is unusually diverse - there are a lot of people who own a few black walnut trees and these people tend to be homeowners or farmers, not forest owners. There aren't many options for buying small or medium scale black walnut processing equipment. There is only one company with material scale processing black walnuts (Hammons Products Company) but apparently local black walnut processing used to happen in lots of Eastern and Midwestern US states. I am interested in commissioning a draft blog post about the history of black walnut processing in the US because I am interested in learning more about the topic. How did we get to the point where we have one big company that serves some states and yet there is virtually nothing else in terms of black walnut processing options available for most people who own black walnut trees? My audience is black walnut tree owners - our company owns about 80 trees (which isn't enough to support a business) and so for our nut supply we also pay local black walnut tree owners to deliver their black walnuts to our site. We are working on figuring out a processing strategy both for our own black walnuts and for black walnuts received. On our website we want to share information that is of interest to these people (black walnut tree owners local to our site). Right now, we are commissioning this blog as a test - we've never commissioned a blog and this is a topic that we are interested in anyway, so no downside for us. We may lightly edit prior to publication or we may not publish depending on how this works out. We are looking for something about 5-6 paragraphs long. Fun / unusual for the right person.
