Acne affects the skin’s oil glands and it is the most common skin disease in the world. It occurs in people of all races and ages, while being highly prevalent in adolescents and young adults. Although acne is not a life threatening condition, severe acne can be quite painful. Having unsightly blemishes causes insecurity and mental distress and cystic acne may develop into disfiguring scarring. Acne develops when the pores of the skin become blocked. These blockages are thought to occur as a result of the following four abnormal processes: a higher than normal amount of sebum production, excessive deposition of the protein keratin leading to comedone formation, colonization of the follicle by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacteria, and the local release of pro-inflammatory chemicals in the skin. Certain triggers such as hormonal changes, certain medications, and heredity have been identified, but flare-ups of the condition are typical, yet unpredictable.
