1. Construct a steady level flight envelope for your airplane (at max. cruise thrust). 2. Establish the takeoff performance for your airplane at different conditions, including engine-out cases if a multi-engined aircraft. 3. Establish the landing performance for your airplane at different conditions, including engine-out cases if a multi-engined aircraft. 4. Establish the climbing performance of your airplane at different altitudes (at max. continuous thrust, from sea level up to the airplane’s service ceiling). 5. Construct a range-payload diagram for your airplane. Project report Breakdown Most importantly: there is no minimum or maximum length for the report. It should be as long as it needs to be. Also, don't fudge the numbers to make your results match the actual results (if you have them). The methods you learn in this course are approximations, I don't expect them to be perfect. If your answer is 20% off, tell me why you think that instead of trying to make your numbers match through sketchy math. Pick any plane you want. Make sure its fixed wing, and not in any way rotary or VTOL (no V-22 Osprey or similar!). As I said in class, the older the aircraft is, the more likely you will be able to find information on it (military & civilian aircraft from the 1940s-1960s especially). Anything newer, and you are likely looking at a lot of proprietary information, and so you will have to make more assumptions. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as the assumptions are sound. A high mark will come in the quality of the report and calculations, not based on the plane you choose. Having to make more assumptions about the plane, due to lack of available information, will not hurt your mark at all. You can design your own aircraft if you'd like. Look to Raymer's book as a start. As always, the assumptions you make and the methodology you use to design it will have to be well-thought out. If you take this route, I will be looking to make sure the aircraft you propose is reasonable. For assumptions/evaluating the aerodynamics, use tools like xfoil (for 2d airfoil analysis), XFLR5, AVL (from MIT) or FreeWake (talk to me if you want a copy) or something similar. These programs will help to estimate coefficients and things like L/D for various speeds, etc etc. Even XPlane uses a vortex lattice method solver, and could be an interesting addition to the report if done properly. I would avoid using CFD, in such a short time frame it is difficult to get proper results. outlined a list of 5 things you need to do for the project. I will go over flight envelopes with you in a tutorial, and I believe you already know enough to do the other 4. For the report, make sure you cite everything that was not an original idea of yours!! I want to know sources, where you got all of your information and where you got your equations. I will not penalize for too many citations, but I will penalize heavily for too few. Number all equations. Number and caption all figures (on the bottom) and all tables (on the top). For the report outline, I suggest you follow: - Abstract (no more than 500 words, summarize the entire project, including your results.) - Introduction/Theory (tell me what/why/how. Explain all of the equations you used.) - Analysis (walk me through the information you have, how you got it, and what you did with it to get your results. This will be the body of the report) - Discussion (reflect on the results you have, how they may differ from actual results, etc. This is a critical section) - Conclusion - References - Appendices Climb hydograph : climb hodograph would be best. Second up would be a table of climb rate values at different altitudes and speeds, though if you had this, you might as well graph it. The bare minimum is rate of climb at a one or a few conditions.
