Hello,

You need to know that these terms exist because they might confuse you in the exam if you've never heard them before. Ok, but what do I mean by "the project manager has strength over an employee"? What I mean is, for example, if both the project manager and the functional manager asked this employee to do a task at the same time, he should do the one requested by the project manager first.
Personally, I like to think of the structures as a group of people staying in a hotel:
1- In the functional structure each person is put in a separate room adjacent to each other. If a person needs to meet another he must get out of the door and walk to the other room (long walk).

2- In the matrix structure, there are "connecting doors" facilities. You have middle doors between the rooms (short walk).

3- In the projected setup, it is as if you are all in the same room. (No walking required).
Remember: there are 3 organizational structures; functional, matrix and projected. They govern how the project manager hires and assigns work to staff members within the same company.
Leadership
If you are applying for the PMP exam, you should be old enough to know that the normal people who we call "boss" have different ways of treating people. There are the nice guy and the mean one. There is the one that watches every move you make and the other that is relaxed. Behavioral scientists actually studied how managers lead people and made theories to describe them and some time to claim that a method is better than the other.
For the exam, you need only know the name of such theories and what they describe. This should be easy because usually, the name of the theory gives clues on what it is about. Here, I will discuss two types of theories:
1- Theories that describe leadership styles (how you make other people do what you want)
2- Theories that describe motivation (how to encourage workers)
Let's start with leadership. There are many styles, but I will focus on two because I think they are the best candidates for a question:
