Entrants are invited to submit designs for a rug 200 (width)x 300 (length) cm . Your designs should be innovative, inspiring and original, suitable for residential and commercial interiors.
RUG DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS
The designs will be hand tufted in New Zealand Wool with the option of bamboo silk detailing. Designs can be produced in cut pile and loop pile with the option of carving to design details. A maximum of six (6) colours per design. Design to be provided in PDF format. Design files no larger than 2MB per design. Designs to be presented in Scale 1 :20. Rug size: 200 x 300cm / Scale 1 :20 drawn 10 x 15cm POINTS
TO CONSIDER WHEN DESIGNING YOUR RUG
Hand tufting is very much a colour by numbers process. The designs are reduced to a line drawing of shapes, and each shape will represent a yarn type, pile type and colour. You will need to consider this when creating your designs. Blurred, smudged, photographic qualities are difficult to translate into rugs. . Consider the scale of the elements of your designs. Will they be too large and novelty like at full scale, or too small, insignificant and difficult to manufacture. If you want well defined linework in your design it needs to be no less than 1 cm thick ([url removed, login to view] in 1 :20 scale drawing). One line of tufting will equal approximately [url removed, login to view] thickness, but will appear broken and sketchy, and cannot be carved (see carving following). Shapes should not be less than 4cm diameter if you want defined shapes like squares, triangles or circles. Smaller shapes will lose their definition and possibly be too difficult to tuft.
