You have been contracted to develop a new retail store management system. This project will result in the creation of a [reasonably] well-documented, Access prototype. Background and Problems: Video Magic sells VCRs, camcorders, and home-based post-production equipment from different suppliers via mail order, telemarketing, and the Internet. Initial results are good, but serious problems threaten the store's future. These problems include: ? Weak coordination and exchange of data between every department in the store; ? Inaccurate tracking of sales for commission purposes; ? Sloppy purchasing and inventory management - some items are chronically overstocked, others are back ordered. The inventory is too large and turns over too slowly. ? Poor customer service as evidenced by lack of repeat business; ? Inability to track or follow-up on past and present customers. Project Requirements: As a new and improved system is needed, and fast. You must: ? Identify the required database entities and the relationship(s) between them. ? Assign meaningful and necessary attributes to the appropriate entity. ? Identify all keys (primary, secondary, and foreign) in all tables. ? Validate your design against the business needs of the Sales, Inventory, Purchasing, and Payroll departments, as well as a planned customer retention program. ? Develop the database using the Access DBMS. ? Design and develop the data entry and output forms needed to operate the business. ? Populate each table with at least 10 records, which you may invent. ? Prepare the following minimum set of queries: o Commissions due sales staff for current week, sorted by employee number. o All items in the inventory and their quantity on hand. Sort by item number. o Inventory items for which quantity on hand is below re-order point and which have not been reordered. o Telephone inquiries that have not resulted in sales. Sort by sales rep. o Video Magic's best customers, sorted by total value of purchases. You must submit a "Project Completion Report" which includes: executive summary, problem statement, framework and scope of solution, business process(es) impacted, E-R diagrams, relational schemas, samples of forms, queries, reports; and benefits to be derived from the new system. You must also demonstrate a functioning Access system. ## Deliverables I NEED THIS BY MONDAY 5/6/02 EVENING (By 6:00PM PST) AT THE LATEST. Here is a check-list that will help you define the project: 1. Describe the overall context in which this project will take place, e.g., the Department or Section to be served and the "Larger Organization" in which it exists. 2. Describe, at least in broad terms, the subject matter(s) to be stored in the database, e.g., persons, things, events, transactions, sales, shipments, donations, etc. 3. Describe (in some detail) the problems to be solved and/or operations to be improved as a result of completing this project. See the PIECES framework in Section 1 of your class binder. 4. What is the source of data? Will you type it all in via forms? Will you export data from some other system and then import it into Access? 5. How many records do you intend to enter or load into various database tables? If you must manually type in records, limit yourselves to no more than 20 records. If you plan to import "flat file(s)" or Excel data into Access, you may load [significantly] more records if you wish. I recommend no more than 1,000 records unless business requirements suggest otherwise. 1. How complex must the database project be? At least 5 tables, but no more than 9 tables, e.g., two or three "main" tables (Driver, Truck, & Trip; PAX, Flight, & Reservation; Doctor, Patient, Exam). Also, plan to create only enough Forms to enter data and Reports to show results of queries. Check out the Access Templates (Database "Wizards"). Three of the templates are just about perfect: a) Students and Classes; b) Event Mgt, and c) Order Entry. Most of the others, such as Asset Racking and Membership are too simple for in-class use. The Northwind demo database might be too complex. 2. If you plan to import data from another source, please give careful thought to security, privacy, and/or confidentiality concerns. For example, do not use data containing Social Security Numbers, actual names or date of birth, etc. The sample Northwind database supplied with Access contains 91 customer names (and addresses) plus 9 employees. Many of the database templates contain sample data as well. 3. While the primary focus of this class is on database design for transaction processing (OLTP), students may have an urgent need to develop an inquiry-only data warehouse for use in analytical processing (OLAP) or decision-support systems (DSS). If you need to go down this path, make sure you have permission, ability, and the tools to extract necessary data from a mainframe, AS400, or other "unresponsive" system for use in this class. Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done. Complete copyrights to all work purchased. ## Platform Must run on PC and MAC, Microsoft Access 98 and higher, in all 3.0+ versions of IE or Netscape if applicable. ## Deadline information The site restricts my delivery deadline and bidding close date. It says 5/7/02, but I need this by ***Monday 5/6/02 6:00PM EST AT LATEST!*** It is highly important that ALL requirements are filled!
