Android SSL configuring

I receive this error [url removed, login to view]: java.security.cert.CertPathValidatorException. And googled a lot on this issue, but still its quite unclear for me. Isnt it enough for server side to have self-signed certificate and manually pass them to android clients in order to trust him? Is any additional root certs are needed and how to create them? Additionally I would like to read to PEMReader directly (from *.pem and *.crt) skipping the phase of manually converting to bks format.
