Club Penguin style avatar walk and collision detection

Hi, I'm working on an avatar chat similar to Club Penguin. However, I'm struggling with getting the avatars to walk smoothly towards the point where the mouse was clicked. I'm also having a problem with collision detection.
What I'd like is a simple project that emulates the way the Club Penguin avatars walk and stop walking, when they collide with an out of bounds area or other obstacles (say a house, a rock or something). Basically, the avatar will walk to the point at where the mouse was clicked and if something is in the way, the avatar will stop walking.
I also need some way to check the avatars depth in relation to obstacles and other avatars (whether the avatar should be placed behind or in front of the obstacle/avatar when it passes by it).
I need the code to be in Actionscript 3.0 and well commented.
