From your project description it is not really apparent what the scope of the project is.
You can control household appliances using a variety of components. Relays generally work like a simple switch, can turn on and off heavy loads, don't require much protection, and have a slow switch on and off time (you can't use them to control the speed of a fan, brightness of a lamp, etc).
MOSFETs and TRIACs are more 'electronic' in nature. They have no moving components, and generally need optical isolation to keep the mains away from the rest of the circuit. They can switch pretty fast.
Apart from switching, you will also need some logic (possibly a microcontroller, an arduino, or a raqspberry pi, etc.) to turn on and off these components (which in turn turn on and off the appliances). This might need to be wireless keeping the communication and control systems mobile and handy.
