Most common problem to my knowledge why Elasticsearch keeps failing is that it's running out of memory. This can be either that Java heap is set too low or if host machine is running out of memory Kernel kills that process. Also sometimes I have seen that queries where too large to fit in cache, which will block usage of ES, not necessarily crash it. You didn't mention if you are using your own Elasticsearch installed in instance, or Elasticsearch cluster or is this AWS Elasticsearch service. Memory issues are easy to detect from elasticsearch logs, if loglevel has been set appropriately and if those are empty syslogs display when Kernel terminates it.
