I need 2 simple enhancements to Apple's TextEdit program that comes with OSX Leopard. 1) When I save text for the first time, I would like an Applescript to populate the "Save as" field with the first X number of characters in the text that I have typed (or, the text up to the first carriage return if it is less than the number of characters I have specified). I haven't decided on the number of characters yet, I will decide that before the project is finished. Also, I would like the spaces of the text and the illegal filename characters to be replaced with underscores. 2) I would like to save TextEdit templates. These templates would already have text in them and they will have the extension '[login to view URL]'. I would like an Applescript to identify when I have opened a 'template', such that if I hit the command-s quick key combo or I select 'save' from the toolbar dropdown or I close the file, it will cause the save dialog box to open with the autonaming from #1 above and with a ".txt" extension. This is different from TextEdit's current behavior - when one hits command-s on a TextEdit document that was opened from a file (meaning, not a new document), it currently overwrites the file and a dialog box is not displayed. One note regarding #2 above: After the template has been replaced with the new name and '.txt' extension, if the document is still open and I make further changes, I DO NOT want the dialog box to appear again when I hit 'save'. I would want TextEdit to return to it's normal operation at that point.
