Biotechnology often is utilized for measurement of quantities of a gene, mRNA, or protein. However, the quantitation can be inaccurate if sample sizes are not equivalent or if DNA copy number variation or gene regulation is occurring. Let’s say we are studying the Ebola virus, which is a RNA virus and need to measure the amount of virus present in the blood and saliva of patients to determine when the survivors can be released from quarantine.

a. Find and generally describe two methods that could allow you to quantify the amount of RNA in body fluids, such as saliva and blood.

b. Pick one of these methods and describe the controls or procedural steps will be necessary to ensure that the quantitation is accurate between samples and between patients.

c. Draw or diagram the expected results of the experiment and controls you have designed (step b) showing one high viral titer, one medium viral titer, and one low viral titer sample. Be sure to include all relevant information, such as axes labels, lane labels, etc.
