In his essay “The Problem of Journalism History,” James Carey suggests that ideally, the history of journalism should be the history of consciousness, or an effort to recapture past forms of imagination. He writes, “When we study the history of journalism, we are studying the way in which people in the past have grasped reality” (1974, p. 92). One way to do this, he suggests, is to study the history of reporting.
Please compare and contrast Jacob Riis’s How the Other Half Lives and William Riordan’s Plunkitt of Tammany Hall as examples of the history of consciousness. What can we learn about the imaginations of New Yorkers at the turn of the 20th century from these two classic examples of reporting? Things to think about include: How do Riordan and Riis view their respective sources? What are the reporters’ assumptions and biases, and how do you know? Who are the audiences, and what are their assumptions and biases? A good essay will take into account the observations of Michael Schudson, Thomas Leonard, and Ellen Fitzpatrick, as well as the primary source material. You may use any style of citations and footnoting, as long as you are consistent.
