Length: 900-1200 words, MLA.
Task: Choose a poem we have read this semester and fully analyze its meaning using whatever literary devices at your disposal (metaphors, similes, symbolism, setting, irony, tone, imagery, etc.) At least one paragraph must be on structure and how it relates to the meaning of the poem.
Required Sources: None (except the poem you’re writing about, of course). The idea here is to use your own abilities to interpret a poem we have covered in class. Do not use any outside sources in this assignment.
Purpose: To show your ability to carefully read and understand a poem. To identify the use of literary devices such as metaphors, similes, symbolism, setting, etc. and to explain how those devices create meaning in a poem. To write an essay that uses quotes from the poem as support and which you have discussed in a way that clearly explains how it creates meaning. To write a coherent, well-structured, and well-supported essay that observes the dictates of good essay writing
