Assignment brief
You are required to use the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package ANSYS to investigate
secondary losses in pipes. More specifically, you will investigate the loss resulting from a single
type of fitting, for example a sudden inline contraction or expansion, or a bend. The choice is yours,
although it is recommended you choose a pipe fitting analysed in the Level 1 module EAT106 [1].
As part of the investigation you should attempt to correlate the results of your chosen scenario using
ANSYS with those obtained by hand calculation, using the theory covered in EAT106.
Submission Requirements
You will hand in a report, which should include the following information:
? A specification of the problem you are investigating. This should include details of pipe
dimensions, fluid used (water is the obvious choice), type of pipe fitting to be considered
etc.
? A hand calculation, based upon the theory described in [1].
? A table summarising boundary conditions and constraints.
? A description and rationale of the mesh size chosen, and a screenshot showing the mesh.
? Screenshots of the contour and vector plots produced by ANSYS.
? A comparison of the results obtained from ANSYS with those obtained by hand calculation,
including a critical interpretation of the ANSYS graphical results.
• Strong Computer Aided Engineering Analysis experience in FEA and CFD
• 8+ years of experience in FEA and CFD analysis of Automotive, Turbomachinery and Nuclear components using ANSYS platform.
• Experience in ANSYS FSI, Structural and Thermal Analysis
• Experience in steady &unsteady aerodynamics of axial compressor, turbine stage and marine propeller using CFX/Fluent
