Controversies, limitations, or conflicting findings in the literature must be highlighted. You are expected to write a “critical review”. The term “review” means that you will read in addition to the chosen article by integrate a variety of academic sources (i.e., from peer-reviewed journals and texts) into a comprehensive and up-to-date review of that topic. You must show evidence of broad reading on the topic. A literature review is not a sequence of summaries of studies but requires integration & organisation of material around themes or organising ideas. The term “critical” means that you should attempt to point out any weaknesses, inadequacies, contradictions, etc. in the existing literature, including being critical of the research methodology, statistical analysis, & interpretation. A purely descriptive review in which you have simply summarised the studies without any critique will fail to meet the expected standards. References.
